Abstract
1400279 Educational appliances J ST CLAIR KILBY 14 June 1972 [18 June 1971 (2)] 27808/72 Heading G5G A teaching system comprises a recording medium (100) (Fig. 12, not shown) for reproducing either audibly, e.g. by-means of a cassette recorder 12, or visually, e.g. by means of video apparatus, a series of questions each followed by data signals (103) representing a correct answer to the particular question; an encoder including tabs 32 controllable by a student hearing or seeing the question for encoding an answer; an indicator associated with the encoder for indicating the encoded answer; and a comparator for comparing the encoded answer with the correct answer contained in the data signals. In operation, the student presses a button 22 to start the tape which automatically stops after the question has been presented. The student then sets up an alpha-numeric answer to the question, by appropriately moving the tabs 32 along respective slots 39, the tabs being associated with indicating strips (42), Fig. 2 (not shown), carrying alphabetic characters visible through openings 46 and numeric characters visible through openings 48 so that, as shown, any twelve character number or word or phrase can be composed in the line of openings 48 or 46. The tabs are also associated with printed circuitry (Figs. 2 to 7, not shown) from which can be derived a signal representative of the positions of the tabs and thus of the encoded answer. After encoding his answer, the student again presses button 22, and the signal derived from the encoder is compared with the correct-answer signal on the recording medium, an indicator light 23 being energized if the answer is incorrect. Suitable circuitry for the comparator and for enabling the teacher to prepare the recording medium with the questions and correct-answer data is described with reference to Figs. 13 and 15 (not shown).
