Abstract

936,054. Freeze drying. MITCHELL ENGINEERING Ltd. Aug. 2, 1962 [Aug. 3, 1961], No. 28309/61. Class 34 (2). In a method of freeze drying a liquid or solid material, the material is frozen in trays, grids, or the like, and during the sublimation treatment the trays &c. are supported in a vertical position so that the dried material falls away from the surface of the undried material. Trays or grids 15 containing a liquid or solid material, which may be either frozen before entry to or frozen whilst in a horizontal position in an evacuable chamber 10, are mounted back to back in pairs in a vertical position between vertically-disposed radiant heaters 17 to sublimate the frozen liquid content of the material. The trays or grids are supported from sliding or roller carriages 16 which engage on upper trough-like rails 12b and the bottoms of the trays run in upwardly open guideways 14. Scrapers or vibrators (not shown) may be provided to assist the dried material to fall from the surface of the frozen material into either a lower catch tray 18 or to a conveyer belt (not shown) in the base of the chamber to deliver it to a vacuum lock hopper.
