Abstract
936,028. Servicing reactors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 21, 1960 [Nov. 26, 1959], No. 40212/59. Class 39 (4). A reactor installation comprises a reactor core 1 having horizontal fuel element channels 2 and horizontal control rod channels (not shown) disposed within a pressure vessel 4 surrounded by a shield 6, the coolant gas being supplied through ports 15 to steam raising units 8 and returning through ducts 16, the whole unit being contained within a gas-tight enclosure 7. A fuel element handling face 17 and a control rod service face 18 are connected by standpipes, respectively, to the fuel element and control rod channels, these faces being machined flat to permit gas-tight connection with a servicing machine 37 operating while the reactor is under load. The machine 37 is transported from one face to the other by a gantry crane 27 and is correctly orientated by a turntable (Fig. 3, not shown), the machine being used both for fuel element handling and for control rod extraction. To permit alignment of the machine with the selected standpipe a platform 22 is provided adjustable in height between pillars 20 or 21 by spacers 23, 24 and spigot holes 25 or 26. Further spigots (not shown) permit horizontal alignment of the machine on the platform. The machine is loaded from a fuel store 38, 39 by coupling it to a connection 40. Spent fuel elements are transferred down a shoot 43 by coupling the machine to a connection 42, these elements being placed in receptacles 47 movable on a trolley to a storage area 48. The compartments 46, 48 are water-filled. Specification 844,765 is referred to.
