Structural cellular material is produced in the unexpanded state by laminating continuous webs of sheet material with parallel bands of adhesive to form a composite material containing a small, and preferably even, number, of individual layers of the sheet material, and building up the composite material by securing together layers thereof with further parallel bands of adhesive, the two groups of adhesive bands being so placed that they co-operate to enable the product to be expanded to the cellular state. The sheet material may be of paper or thin cardboard. As shown, webs 1 and 2 of paper &c. are printed with bands of adhesive by rollers 3 and 4 and brought together at 5 to form a composite web, the layers of which are stuck together by the adhesive on web 2. The composite web is cut by the shear 6 into portions of equal length which pass down the band 7 to a stack device 8 to form a stack 9 which may be expanded to the cellular state after any pressure- or heat-treatment that may be required. The lines of adhesive may run along, across or diagonally across the webs. In other embodiments: (1) the composite layers consist of an odd number of individual layers, have bands of adhesive on both exposed faces, staggered with respect to one another, and are interleaved with adhesive-free individual layers; (2) composite layers and individual layers each have adhesive on one side only; and (3) two two-ply webs are run through the machine to yield a four-ply web, and this process may be repeated until the product becomes too thick to be handled in this way; it is then cut and stacked ; this method is useful when the stack is to be formed with a regular arrangement of layers of different materials.
