Abstract
935,357. Packaging. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. May 25, 1962, No. 20194/62. Class 94(1). Hot molten material such as bitumen is poured into a flexible container while the latter is supported in a water bath, the container being sealed, and removed from the bath when its contents are solidified by cooling. In one embodiment of filling apparatus, a plastics bag 1, formed by clamping the base of a tube, is supported about a nozzle 3 by counterweight means 5 above the water bath. As the bag is filled so it descends until, when filling is complete, its upper end is released and clamped and it is moved along in the bath for cooling. Subsequently the ends are heat-sealed. In another embodiment (not shown) a plastics foil tube is continuously formed about the nozzle and increments of material enclosed by transverse seals. The joined packages are drawn through the water bath by means not described. Examples of suitable bag materials are polyvinyl-chloride and polypropylene. Mention is made of known process in which bitumen is packaged in polyvinyl alcohol film which has the advantage of being readily removable by immersing the package in water.
