Abstract

The invention comprises 1-allyl-4-phenyl-4-carbopropoxy-piperidine; its acid addition salts; the preparation thereof comprising (a) reacting 4-phenyl-4-carbopropoxypiperidine with an allyl halide; (b) reacting a 1,5-dihalo3-phenyl-3-carbopropoxy-pentane with allylamine; or (c) esterifying 1-allyl-4-phenyl 4-carboxypiperidine with a propylating agent, the carboxypiperidine being optionally prepared by hydrolysis of the corresponding nitrile and the nitrile by reacting benzyl cyanide with a di-(b -haloethyl)allylamine; and pharmaceutical compositions containing them (see Group VI).ALSO:Analgesic compositions comprise 1-allyl-4-phenyl-4-carboproproxypiperidine or an acid addition salt thereof with a pharmaceutical carrier or diluent and optionally together with a morphinic analgesic such as morphine, methadene or meperidine. The 1-allyl-piperidine compound in addition suppresses the undesirable side effects of the morphinic analgesics. Compositions may be in a form suitable for oral or rectal administration but are preferably formulated as solutions for parenteral use. Examples of such solutions are given.
