Abstract

Alkaline oxidation of lignosulphonic acid compounds is effected by a process in which a gas containing free oxygen is passed in finely dispersed form through a reaction zone containing lignosulphonic acid compounds and lime and to which mixture sodium carbonate had been added. The following reaction conditions are maintained: -(1) temperature 120-200 DEG C., (2) partial pressure of oxygen below 20 p.s.i., (3) time less than 4 hours and (4) the amount of sodium carbonate is equivalent to the calcium content of the lignosulphonic acid compounds plus an amount which on reacting with the lime maintains a pH not less than 12. The reaction products are separated into a solid phase (essentially calcium carbonate) and a liquid phase containing sodium derivatives of vanillin, acetovanillone, lignin substance and oxalic acid. Optional subsequent steps to isolate the oxidation products include solvent extraction, de-emulsification with a surface active agent and acidification to precipitate lignin substance.
