Abstract

935,228. Finishing fabrics. VELCRO S.A. July 3, 1961 [July 5, 1960], No. 23896/61. Class 42 (2). A machine for treating a terry type fabric, the loops of which are formed of multi-filament yarns, comprises means for conveying a fabric web T past a body 6 which has a rough surface and at least one projection 8 on the periphery thereof, the body 6 being rotated so that the peripheral speed is greater than, and in the same direction as, that of the fabric T at the point of contact therebetween so that the projection 8 can open the loops to separate the strands 3, Fig. 3, by friction of the body 6 against the fabric T. The fabric passes over glass bars 4, over an adjustable transmission roller 5, over the body 6 and between driving rollers 7. A reciprocating motion in the direction transverse to the direction of movement of the fabric may also be given to the body 6. The body 6 may be arranged obliquely across the web and in this case a number of bodies 6 may be arranged in herring-bone formation. The body may have a cross-section in the form of a triangle, square, hexagon, convex lens, star or a circle having projections distributed about the surface thereof. Alternative constructions are shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The body 6 may be constituted of natural or artificial abrading stone, glass or ground crystal or may be formed of particles of hard material embedded in a softer material, e.g. synthetic plastic or rubber. A plurality of bodies 6 may be provided and a number of triangular section bodies 6 may be fitted into grooves 12 on a cylinder 11, Fig. 13. The fabric T may be treated by infra-red heating apparatus in the location of the area engaging the body or bodies 6, Fig. 14 (not shown), to set the loops if they are made of nylon. Specification 721,338 is referred to.
