Abstract

935,140. Cop tubes. J. J. KEYSER. Jan. 11, 1962 [Jan. 13, 1961], No. 1037/62. Class 120 (3). A cop-carrier which permits the production of large packages while maintaining a balloon of constant minimum length, comprises a main tubular member and at least one auxiliary tubular member mounted on and coaxial with the main member, the auxiliary and main members being relatively adjustable lengthwise, and the main member having uniform outer cross - section throughout the length thereof over which the main and auxiliary members are relatively adjustable; when more than one auxiliary member is provided they are superimposed and the length of any one equals the length of the main member divided by a quotient which has as numerator the total number of auxiliary members increased by one, and as denominator the number of auxiliary members which have an inner diameter larger than the outer diameter of the particular auxiliary member whose length is to be determined also increased by one. Thus in Fig. 4, there are two auxiliaries; auxiliary 8 is onethird and auxiliary 7 is two-thirds the length of the main member 6. The wind takes place in three stages, each on the upper part of the composite carrier, the first on auxiliary 8 which is then moved to the bottom of auxiliary 7 for the second stage to take place on the upper part of 7, the final stage being effected on the upper part of the main member when 7 and 8 are moved to the bottom of the main member. The main member may comprise two members, one inside the other, of the same length and different thicknesses, the outer one serving as a carrier which can be detached from the inner one, its wall thickness equalling that of the other auxiliaries and being less than that of the main member. To prevent slip between the various members and to maintain their relative axial position, they may be of oval, polygonal, ribbed or other non-circular cross-section; properly to locate the auxiliary relatively to the main member the latter may have a shoulder or a ring co-operating with a groove in the auxiliary. The members may be of metal or synthetic material or of impregnated paper.
