Abstract

Graft copolymers are made by contacting a film of a polyolefine with styrene in the presence of an aliphatic polyamine at a temperature at which the styrene will swell, but not dissolve, the film. Polyolefines specified are polyethylene and polypropylene. Polyamines specified are tetraethylene pentamine, 1,3-propylene diamine, dipropylene tetramine and aminoethyl ethanolamine. Prior to being contacted with styrene the polyolefine film may be treated to form polymerization-initiating centres thereon, e.g. by exposure to thermal, ultra-violet or high energy ionizing radiation. When using ultraviolet light the polyolefine film may contain a sensitizer, e.g. benzophenone. The source of high energy ionizing radiation may be Co-6o or a Van de Graaf generator. The resulting films may be converted into permselective membranes either by sulphonation or by chloromethylation followed by quaternization.
