In a method of constructing a capacitor from tapes comprising a first layer of varnish on a supporting carrier, a metallic coating thereon, and a second layer of varnish overlying the metallic coating, wherein at least two such tapes are juxtaposed with the whole first layer surface of one in contact with the whole second layer surface of another, with removal of the supporting carrier and subsequent rolling, as set forth in the parent Specification the tapes are secured rigidly at their contacting surfaces so that together they form a single self-supporting bond. Foils 11 (Fig. 2) comprising layers of e.g. cellulose acetate 13, laterally displaced evaporated metal coating 14, and a thicker polystyrene film 15 are carried on tapes 6 of e.g. waxed paper in storage rolls 1 (Fig. 1) from which they are wound over deflection rollers 2, 3 for separation of the foils from the tapes, which are stored for re-use on rolls 4. Friction clutches in the roller drives prevent damage to the foils, which are coated on the cellulose acetate layers with a solvent or cement from sprayer or evaporator 7, and pressed together by friction driven rollers 8 in a drying enclosure so that the foils adhere. The composite foil is cut to width at 9 and wound into a roll capacitor; contact with the electrodes being made by metal spraying the ends.
