Abstract

841,473. Capacitors. HUNT (CAPACITORS) Ltd., A. H. Sept. 14, 1956 [Sept. 15, 1955], No. 26412/55. Class 37. A method of making a wound capacitor wherein the dielectric is applied as a coating or layer on a strip or sheet of flexible backing material in a manner as to be readily strippable therefrom, metallisation is then applied to the exposed dielectric surface and the backing strip carries the metallised dielectric during a subsequent demetalling operation. The backing strip 11 of waxed paper, regenerated cellulose or viscose may first be coated with a heat-softenable release agent 12 such as paraffin wax, before application of dielectric lacquer 13 containing polystyrene or cellulose acetate. Two coatings of dielectric may be given, preferably of different materials such as liquid polystyrene followed by a solution of ethyl cellulose in amyl alcohol. Aluminium 14 is next evaporated on to the surface and the composite strip is passed through demetallising apparatus as described in Specifications 647,573, 680,843. The backing strip may be removed during winding by passing the composite strip over a heated roller which softens the release agent. Another embodiment uses two composite strips having demetallised margins along one edge. The strips 18, 19 are led from rolls 20, 21 and laid together with the metallising of one in contact with the dielectric of the other and with demetallised margins on opposite edges. The two strips pass over heated rollers 27, 28 where the backing strips are released. The electrode bearing strips and wound together to form a capacitor 22 whilst the backing strips are wound on to rolls 25, 26. Specifications 841,474 and 841,475 also are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 736,479.
