Abstract

Materials having a complexing function are made by reacting an organic compound containing one or more chelating groups and which is capable of forming complexes with metal ions and which contains a reactive halogen atom, with a polyhydroxy compound so that the organic compound is bound to the polyhydroxy compound through an ether (oxygen) linkage. The reaction may be so effected that only a limited number of the hydroxy groups of the polyhydroxy compound are converted into ether linkages. A metal derivative of the polyhydroxy compound, especially an alkali metal derivative, may be used in the reaction. Specified polyhydroxy compounds include cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, sugars, and starch. They may be used for the extraction, concentration, and purification of metal ions from solution under either static or dynamic conditions, e.g. for the removal of harmful metal ions from the body; for the adjustment of metal ion concentrations in the body; for the control of biological systems by controlling the concentration of or removal of trace metals; and, in the form of their metal complexes, as agents toxic towards micro-organisms.
