Abstract
934,422. Railway vehicle draw gear: shock absorbers. DOWTY HYDRAULIC UNITS Ltd. Oct. 3, 1960 [July 3, 1959], No. 23002/59. Classes 103(5) and 108(3). A railway vehicle having a headstock 3 mounting side buffers is provided with an automatic inclined swing coupler 1 which may pivot about vertical and horizontal axes intersecting at the point 4, the coupler being carried by a drawbar 2 which may move inwardly from the normal position shown, where the buffers are in contact, and also outwardly from the normal position against a snatch spring 12 and the action of a hydraulic damper 18, 23. The coupler is supported in the horizontal position by a caged spring device 6 pivotally mounted on trunnions 8 supported in brackets 9 as described and shown in Specification 876,173. The drawbar 2 has a pressure plate 13 which bears against a shoulder on a piston rod 14 fixed on the bar 2, and a bearer plate 16 is also provided. The hydraulic damper comprises a cylinder 18, filled with liquid to the level 26 shown and provided with a tapering groove 27, and a piston 23 provided with a spring pressed valve plate 25 controlling fluid flow through holes 24. If the vehicle is buffed the energy is absorbed by the side buffers, and the drawbar 2 moves inwardly so that a slight pre-compression of the spring 12 is relieved and the piston 23 moves towards the base of the cylinder 18 without appreciable resistance. On recoil of the buffers, the drawbar 2 will travel outwardly under the tension load in the drawbar at a rate which is limited by the hydraulic damper.
