Abstract

934,146. Activated sludge processes. ACTIVATED SLUDGE Ltd. Oct. 7. 1960 [Oct. 8 1959], No. 34065/59. Class 46. The three aerobic treatment stages, marked respectively stage 1, stage 2 and stage 3, are of similar construction although not necessarily of equal capacity, and each stage comprises a tank divided into an agitation zone 10 and a sludge separation zone 11 separated by a vertical division wall 12; while communication between stages is by weir 21. Communication between agitation section and the sludge separation section, for the return of sludge as hereinafter described, is provided by a narrow section 13 formed by a wall 14 located fairly close to the wall 12. Porous stone or other air diffusers 15 are located adjacent the bottom of the agitation section 10. An opening 16 provides communication between the upper parts of sections 10 and 11, this opening being associated with deflectors or baffles 17, and 17a to prevent short circuiting. There is also a baffle 17b at the inlet to direct the sewage or other waste liquor to the lower part of the tank 10. The sludge separation section 11 has a sloping bottom so that the separated sludge is directed towards a sludge return opening 19 and the diffusers 20, which are under manual control, are used to control the amount of sludge returned. There may be more or less than three stages before purified effluent is discharged at 24. In other modifications (not shown) the tanks are of circular cross section and the levels of aerators 15 and 20 are different.
