[Also in Group XVII] Apparatus for dispensing sheets of paper or other material sequentially from a pack, or dispensing a length of material from a roll, comprises a baseplate which is secured to the inner surface of a vertical wall 14 of a container for the material, and has channelled edges to slidably receive a plate 17 which has limited downward movement against the action of a return spring, a flexible tongue 24 integral with or secured to the plate 17, a finger-piece 26 integral with or secured to the outer face of the tongue 24, a friction member 36 secured permanently or removably on the opposite side of the tongue, and a plate 29 forming a support for the material to be dispensed. In operation, when the finger-piece 24 is depressed and urged downwardly, the friction member 36 is first urged inwardly against a sheet, and is then moved downwardly with the sheet until the latter protrudes through a throat 33 at the bottom of the container sufficiently to be grasped. As shown, the friction member is used to dispense a length of towelling 35 from a roll, and the appropriate length is then severed by tearing it along the lower edge of the wall 44; when the towelling 35 is all dispensed, that 34 from another roll is then dispensed. The sheet material may comprise a pack of separate sheets which are stapled together through tear tabs, and secured to a backing suspended from pegs &c. within the cabinet. In a modification, the flexible tongue comprises an upper section secured to the slider 17, and a lower section hinged thereto.
