Abstract

933,893. Welding by pressure. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. June 7, 1962 [June 27, 1961], No. 23314/61. Class 83 (4). The extent of a weld slug e.g. formed by resistance welding, is checked by forming one or more recesses, indentations or holes in one or both of the members to be welded prior to welding, and after welding using an X-ray test or equivalent or visual test to determine whether the recess, indentation or hole is partly or wholly removed or filled. In resistance lap welding tubes 10, 11, Fig. 1, a groove 12 of depth equal to the required depth of fusion is formed in one of the members 10. If during welding insufficient fusion occurs the groove 12 is not completely filled and this is revealed by X-ray inspection. Recesses 16, Fig. 4, formed in the edge of a member 15 to be resistance butt welded to a member 14 serve a similar purpose. In resistance lap welding bores 18, Fig. 6, are formed through one or both of the workpieces 10, 11. After welding the portion 20 of the bore 18 outside the weld slug 19 is filled with gas and molten metal. The depth of the portion 20 is revealed by X-ray or by use of a dye penetrant. In a modification, bores 21, Fig. 8, are formed to such a depth as to be filled with fused weld metal if a satisfactory weld is made or as shown to remain unfilled if the extent of the weld slug 22 is insufficient.
