In a horizontal axis rotary hook, adapted for sewing with very heavy thread, the stationary bobbin case carrier 13 is formed on its needle thread loop cast-off side with a radial loop-controlling flange 25, the edge of which is positioned closely adjacent the path of travel of the loop-taking beak 10 on the rotary body 7, flange 25 also extending for approximately 60 degrees beyond the loopseizing position on the cast-on side of the carrier 13. Flange 25 on the cast-on side is formed adjacent the loop-seizing position with a peripheral notch 40 to reduce the radius of its edge 38, its face is formed adjacent the loop-seizing position with a bobbin thread guiding slot 34a, and the edge 38 is bevelled as at 39 to assist the passage of the anchored needle thread limb TW on to the face of flange 25. The end portion of the latter on the cast-off side farthest from the loop-seizing position is bevelled as at 41 to facilitate the passage of the limb TW thereupon. The axis of the peripheral bearing rib 12 on the carrier 13 is positioned lower than the axis of the side wall of the latter to increase the gap between said side wall and the inner face of the rotary body 7 at the loop-seizing position, for providing additional clearance for the very heavy thread. The flange 25 is formed on the cast-off side adjacent the loop-seizing position with a peripheral notch 42 to facilitate the passage of the thread loop as it is being withdrawn from the hook.
