Abstract
933,854. Semi-conductor devices. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Nov. 26, 1959 [Aug. 26, 1958], No. 27388/58. Class 37. [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XL (a)] An electric coupling device comprises a plurality of conducting strips on an insulating support and a plurality of sets of electrodes, each set having portions operatively adjacent portions of an individual combination of the strips and separated by resistance or dielectric material so that the impedance between a set and each of the strips of its associated combination is less than between that set and any other strip. Fig. 1 shows an assembly of nine electroluminescent lamps A-J on a conducting layer 11 on a glass base 10, which can be operated selectively to display figures 0-9. The necessary switching arrangement consists of a glass plate 13 carrying conducting strips 14-21 covered by a layer of voltagevariable resistive material such as silicon carbide. Sets of electrodes 0-9 are arranged to contact the silicon carbide at selected regions overlaying the conducting strips to provide individual combinations corresponding to the connections necessary to display a particular numeral. When a voltage is applied from A.C. source 22 via selector switch 22 to one of the electrode sets, the impedance of the silicon carbide between each electrode and the conducting strip falls to provide the connection. In an alternative arrangement the electrodes are arranged alongside each conducting strip instead of above. Dielectric material may replace the silicon carbide, if a high frequency (20 mcs.) signal is used.
