Abstract

Skin barrier compositions of viscous liquid form comprise a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol with a K index of 30 to 120 and an acetyl group content of below 40%, a plasticizer therefor, a non-ionic wetting agent, water and a preserving agent such as one or more halides or hydroxy halides of a metal of Group II, III, IV or VIII of the Periodic Table. Specified plasticizers are ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and glycerine. Specified non-ionic wetting agents are condensates of ethylene oxide with long chain alcohols, acids and alkyl phenols, particularly isooctyl phenol. Specified metal halides are magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, zinc chloride, ferric chloride, aluminium chloride and aluminium hydroxy chloride. The compositions may also comprise means for improving adherence to the skin, e.g. gelatin; anaesthetic substances, e.g. benzocaine, novocaine and benzyl alcohol; bacteriostatic substances, e.g. pyrogallol, thymol iodide, 7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinolinic acid, 2,4-m-dichloro xylenol, benzyl benzoate, b -naphthol benzoate, and azo and acridine dyestuffs; and water-soluble volatile organic liquids, e.g. ethyl alcohol. Examples describe aqueous compositions comprising polyvinyl alcohol, glycerine, isooctylphenol polyethoxylate and (1) aluminium chloride; (2) aluminium chloride and ethyl alcohol; (3 and 4) aluminium chloride, ethyl alcohol and gelatin; and (5) aluminium hydroxy chloride with (a) magnesium chloride, (b) calcium chloride and gelatin, and (c) zinc chloride and gelatin.ALSO:Skin barrier compositions of viscous liquid form comprise a water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol with a K index of 30 to 120 and an acetyl group content of below 40%, a plasticizer therefor, a non-ionic wetting-agent, water and a preserving agent such as one or more halides or hydroxy-halides of a metal of Group II, III, IV or VIII of the Periodic Table. Specified plasticizers are ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol and glycerine. Specified non-ionic wetting agents are condensates of ethylene oxide with long-chain alcohols, acids and alkylphenols, particularly iso-octyl phenol. Specified metal halides are magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, zinc chloride, ferric chloride, aluminium chloride and aluminium hydroxychloride. The compositions may also comprise means for improving adherence to the skin, e.g. gelatine; anaesthetic substances, e.g. benzocaine, novocaine and benzyl alcohol; bacteriostatic substances, e.g. pyrogallol, thymol iodide, 7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinolinic acid, 2,4-m-dichloro xylenol, benzyl benzoate, b -naphthol benzoate, and azo and acridine dyestuffs; and water-soluble volatile organic liquids, e.g. ethyl alcohol. Examples describe aqueous compositions comprising polyvinyl alcohol, glycerine, iso-octyl phenol polyethoxylate and (1) aluminium chloride; (2) aluminium chloride and ethyl alcohol; (3 and 4) aluminium chloride, ethyl alcohol and gelatine; and (5) aluminium hydroxychloride with (a) magnesium chloride, (b) calcium chloride and gelatine, and (c) zinc chloride and gelatine.
