Abstract

The invention comprises an acid-equilibrated chain stopped organopolysiloxane liquid comprising either an unsymmetrical, branched poly(silarylenesiloxane) liquid of the formula <FORM:0933502/IV(a)/1> or an unsymmetrically substituted poly(silarylenesiloxane) liquid of the formula <FORM:0933502/IV(a)/2> wherein each R is a lower alkyl, aryl, halo-alkyl or halo-aryl radical, each R1 is H or R, each Ar is an arylene or halo-arylene radical, m is a number from 1 up to the number of C atoms on Ar substitutable by R1, x, y, z and n are numbers from 1 to 50. Liquids of Formula II may be made by reacting an unsymmetricallysubstituted dihalo aromatic hydrocarbon with a dihalosilane, hydrolysing the resulting product with a triorganohalosilane and acid equilibrating the hydrolysate. Liquids of Formula I can be made by reacting an unsymmetrically substituted dihalo aromatic hydrocarbon with a dihalosilane, cohydrolysing the resulting product with an organotrihalosilane and a triorganohalosilane in such amounts that the organo/Si ratio of the mixture is more than 2, and acid-equilibrating the hydrolysate. Examples are given. Uses: As high temperature lubricants and hydraulic and heat transfer fluids.
