Abstract

The thermal and moisture stability of an organopolysiloxane liquid, resin or gum, which has been polymerized from a low to a higher molecular weight state with an alkali metal compound, is improved by contacting the siloxane with a quaternary compound of the formula Y4NX or Y4PX, where Y is a monovalent hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical free from olefinic unsaturation and X is halogen, examples of which are given. The siloxanes specified contain Si-bonded alkyl, alkenyl, cyanoalkyl or aryl radicals. The quaternary compounds may be used in solid form or as solutions or suspensions. The process is effected merely by mixing the siloxane and stabilizer at any temperature, e.g. from 20 DEG -150 DEG C. Examples describe the known polymerization and above stabilization of (1, 3) dimethylpolysiloxane and (2) g -cyanopropylmethylsiloxane-dimethyl-siloxane copolymer. The stabilized copolymer of (2) was mixed with fume silica and benzoyl peroxide and cured to an elastomer. Specification 772,088 and U.S.A.
