Abstract

A siloxane of the formula <FORM:0848311/IV(a)/1> is polymerized by interaction in the absence of moisture with a silane of the formula R1mSiX4-m in such an amount that during at least the latter portion of the reaction the ratio of X groups to Si OH is not greater than 1, wherein in said siloxane and silane each R and R1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon radical, X is a halogen atom, n is at least 150 and m is 1, 2 or 3. R and R1 may be alkyl, alkenyl, cyclo-aliphatic, aralkyl, aryl or halogenated aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon radicals. The reaction, which occurs upon mixing the two reactants, is preferably carried out at a temperature below 50 DEG C. The products can be freed from Si-bonded halogen and from any residual hydrogen halide as by washing or by neutralisation with alkali. The products may be homo- or co-polymers. Trifunctional silanes act as cross-linking agents to produce three dimensional polymers, and can thus be used to cure diorganosiloxanes ; difunctional silanes produce linear halogen-terminated polymers ; and monofunctional silanes produce triorganosilyl endblocked polymers. Examples are given. Uses : the products are useful in making siloxane elastomers, or where end-blocked with triorganosilyl groups can be used per se as stable liquids.
