[Also in GroupXXXV] A paper web 1 travels through a number of cylinders A, B, for multi-colour printing. reference marks m being applied to the web at regular intervals by a preliminary marking device I. Photo-electric or electromagnetic detectors 11 are associated with the marks m, whilst a mark m 1 on each cylinder 2 is detected by device 13. The detectors 11, 13 are connected to comparator 14 the output of which controls servomotor 8 coupled to differential 6 through which the printing cylinder is driven. If the passage of reference mark m 1 is detected first, a signal is applied to bi-stable multivibrator 22 which produces a high-voltage signal at 22a. At the same time, a highvoltage signal is produced at the output 21b of monostable multivibrator 21, so that gate 24 produces a signal whose duration corresponds to the period between the passage of the marks past their corresponding detectors. This signal is applied to control device 20 for servomotor 8 to synchronize the two marks. If the paper web 1 leads the cylinder 2 so that mark m is detected in advance, gate 23 is opened by high-voltage signals applied to terminals 23a, 23b. This gate delivers an output signal which lasts until multivibrator 22 is operated by the passage of mark m 1 . The duration of the gate output signal is again equal to the period between the passage of the marks past their respective detectors. The multivibrator 21 is reset after a predetermined period, the multivibrator 22 being reset at the same time. The output signals from the gates 23, 24 may control a brake on the cylinder 2.
