933,359. Pneumatic gauging. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. March 13, 1962 [March 14, 1961], No. 9372/61. Class 106 (2). A method of determining the minimum size of an aperture in a member such as nozzle guide vane 20, Fig. 1, comprises supplying air to chamber 30 at constant rate through inlet 31, allowing the air to pass through vane 20, when valve 33 is open, and opening bleed port 36 a sufficient amount to cause the pressure in the chamber 30 to be maintained at a value equal to the zero 35 of manometer 34. A scale 40 is provided to indicate how far bleed port 36 was opened and hence the size of the aperture in the apertured member. A block 43 of known size may be inserted in the aperture. The vane 20 may have apertures or throats 27 which are open to the atmosphere on one side. This side may be closed by a member 44 of known size in order to determine the size of aperture 27. A compensating valve (Figs. 6-10, not shown) may be provided in member 44, which allows escape of air from throat 27 to atmosphere by an amount depending on the variation in length X thus compensating for errors, within the manufacturing tolerance in X.
