Abstract
933,307. Surgical tubes. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Jan. 12, 1960 [Jan. 2, 1959; Feb. 26, 1959], Nos. 234/59 and 6777/59. Class 81 (2). An endotracheal tube or other catheter comprises a tubular member 10 of yielding material, such as natural or synthetic rubber, and a reinforcing helix 12 embedded in the wall thereof which has a bore through which fluid communication can be made between points which are located externally and internally of the trachea or other body cavity when the catheter is in use. The helix may open at or near its inner end through the tube wall into an inflatable cuff 11, Fig. 3, or into the interior of the tube 10 (not shown). A tube with two inflatable cuffs for insertion into the trachea and a bronchus has two helices embedded in its wall, the turns of which alternate, and a projection for resting on the bronchial fork to locate the tube correctly. The helices may be formed of stainless steel, a cupro-nickel alloy, capillary glass tubing or a synthetic plastics material such as nylon.
