Hides, particularly for the manufacture of uppers of boots and shoes, are tanned by a twostep tanning in a single bath, the first step comprising pretanning the hides in a bath comprising a monochromate, a salt of an organic acid, and a mineral acid, and the second step comprising tanning the hides by means of a trivalent chromium salt, the reduction of hexavalent chromium by means of a thiosulphate or sulphite being carried out during the second step. The organic acid may be an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or an aliphatic or aromatic decarboxylic acid, an amino carboxylic acid or an aromatic sulphonic acid containing carbonyl or hydroxyl groups. The ratio of mineral acid to monochromate to salt of organic acid is preferably 1.0: 0.5: 0.5.
