Abstract

933,009. Jet-propulsion nozzles. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Nov. 27, 1961, No. 42395/61. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXXIII] A jet-engine exhaust duct of which the downstream end constitutes a propelling nozzle has a number of gas deflector vanes mounted within the downstream end to deflect jet exhaust gases passing therebetween in the same direction, and gas flow control means, mounted within a diffusing passage in the duct, which assist in preventing the jet gases from breaking away from the boundary surface or surfaces of the diffusing gas passage, whereby in operation the jet gases substantially fill the whole volume of the propelling nozzle. A sleeve 26, supported by angularly-spaced struts 17, enables the diffusing angle between the tangents, at any cross-section, to surfaces 24, 25 of a casing 16 and a duct 14 respectively, to be reduced, e.g. halved. This assists in preventing exhaust gases from a turbine 13 from breaking away from the surfaces 24, 25, so that substantially the whole volume of a propelling nozzle 20 is filled with these gases and deflector vanes 22 of the nozzle 20 are subjected to substantially the same gas load. The arrangement may be as described in Specification 913,312, in which rotation of a frame 21 of the nozzle 20 alters the direction in which the gases leave the nozzle, which direction may be any one of three positions to provide either a forward, backward or lift thrust. The nozzle may be integral with the exhaust duct.
