Abstract

932,972. Web-winding apparatus. KEELAVITE HYDRAULICS Ltd. May 15, 1962 [March 22, 1961], No. 10515/61. Class 100 (1). A web-winding apparatus comprises a winding drum 5 driven through transmission mechanism 6 from a displacement - type hydraulic motor 4, a pump 1 supplying working liquid to the motor 4 through a delivery passage 3, a main valve 19 controlling the pressure in the passage 3, and a relief valve 30 which determines the pressure maintained by the main valve 19, the opening pressure of the valve 30 being controlled by a loaded floating-roller 10 engaging a bight 7a in the web 7 so that the torque exerted by the motor 4 varies with the web tension. The main valve 19 includes a piston 18 acted upon by a spring 26 tending to move the piston to a position wherein a part 20 thereof closes a port 22, and subjected at its ends to hydraulic pressure in chambers 23a, 24a. The chamber 23a has uninterrupted access to the pressure in the passage 3 through a passage 27 in the piston 18, whereas the chamber 24a is connected to the passage 3 through a restricted passage 28. The chamber 24a is also connected by a passage 29 with the valve 30. An outlet chamber 21 above the port 22 in the valve 19 communicates with the reservoir by a passage 21a. The loading spring 32 for the valve 30 bears at one end against an abutment 33 on a rod 17 connected to a lever 11 carrying the roller 10, so that movement of the roller caused by variations in web tension causes corresponding variations in the pressure of the spring and in the pressure at which the valve 30 opens. Normally the valve 18 will not be in its closed position but will be maintained in a position such that the pressure in the passage 3 is equivalent to that at which the valve 30 opens. Variation in the latter pressure due to movements of the roller 10 causes variation of the pressure in the chamber 24a and movement of the valve 18 so as to effect corresponding changes in the pressure in the passage 3 and in the torque exerted by the motor 4. The lever 11 is connected to a dash-pot 16 and may be loaded by weights 13, springs, or fluid-pressure piston and cylinder assemblies. An hydraulic accumulator 34 is connected to the passage 29 to prevent sudden movements of the piston 18 which might be caused by sudden movements of the roller 10.
