Abstract
932,910. Turning inside out. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. May 25, 1961 [June 7, 1960], No. 19855/60. Class 112. [Also in Group XXVIII] In a method of lining a substantially rigid pipe 1, e.g. steel, copper, lead or glass fibre reinforced synthetic resin, an end 7 of a plastic lining, e.g. of natural or synthetic rubber or synthetic resin, is attached to one end of the pipe, the lining extending outwardly of the pipe and fitting around a closed mandrel 5 located in position to traverse the pipe, the other end 9 of the lining being attached to the mandrel, and creating a difference in pressure between the interior of the pipe and the exterior space occupied by the mandrel whereby the lining is progressively rolled off the mandrel and attached to the internal surface of the pipe by means of an adhesive layer. As shown, the mandrel which is supported on rollers 25 is a tube of aluminium or steel, closed at one end 6, or alternatively, is closed at both ends or is an inflatable bag, and the pipe 1 is secured to a metal pipe 11 closed by a plate 19 having a vacuum pump connection 21. Reduction of the air pressure within the pipe 1 causes the mandrel to move into the pipe so that the lining is progressively rolled off the mandrel, turned inside out and attached to the interior surface 24 of the pipe, that surface and the inner surface of the liner having previously been coated with a natural or synthetic rubber pressure adhesive. The end of the lining is flared radially outwardly and secured to the flange 3 of the pipe, and the lined pipe is then placed in a steam autoclave until the lining is vulcanized. A cable attached to the mandrel and wound about a braked capstan controls the rate of movement of the mandrel into the pipe. In alternative methods, the mandrel is allowed to move into the pipe a short distance at a time, and is pulled back axially-outwardly relative to the lining and pipe by momentarily releasing the vacuum and sealing of the lining on the mandrel, or the pressure difference between the interior of the pipe and the mandrel is brought about by applying a positive air pressure to the mandrel with respect to the interior of the pipe.
