Abstract

932,633. Marine jet propulsion drives. H. D. NELSON. Sept. 14, 1961 [Sept. 15, 1960; Dec. 1, 1960], No. 33003/61. Class 114. A marine jet propulsion unit 13, Fig. 2, fixed to the transom of a boat comprises an axial flow impeller 22 which draws water from a bifurcated scoop nozzle 35A through ducting of gradually increasing cross-section ending in an annular opening 36A (see also Fig. 10), and discharges it through a removable nozzle 51. The axis of the nozzle is inclined to the horizontal so that as it is rotated about this axis, by ring gear and pinion 61, the jet is deflected first to one side and then downwardly, Fig. 5, passing over chevroned vanes 58 which provide reverse propulsion. The arm 59 on which the vanes are mounted, pivots as the nozzle rotates, so that it does not drag in the water during forward propulsion. As an alternative, Fig. 11 (not shown), the rotational axis of the nozzle may be horizontal and axis of the nozzle orifice 52 inclined. A steering wheel, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), rotates the nozzle through a control rod 64 and a chain on which a marker is mounted to indicate the portion of the nozzle. A flap valve, Fig. 4 (not shown), is fitted in the base of the intake 41A to increase the intake area at low speed. A lubricating water pipe 46 feeds water to the bearing 32A, and a similar pipe may be used to supply cooling water to the engine 29. The unit may also be mounted inboard with the nozzle 51 protruding through the transom.
