Abstract

An olefinically unsaturated polyfluoro compound which is an ether or an ester is grafted by means of ionizing radiation on to the surface of a polymeric material in order to impart dirt, oil, ink or water repellent effects thereto. The polymeric material may be in the form of a fibric, fibre, paper, plastic film or leather. Polyfluoro compounds specified are 1,1-dihydroperfluoro-ethyl, -butyl, -amyl, -hexyl, -octyl and -dodecyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid, and ethers derived from the corresponding perfluoro alcohols, and vinyl and allyl esters of polyfluorocarboxylic acids, including polymers of such compounds containing residual unsaturation. The process may be carried out by exposing the substrate polymer to ionizing radiation either before contact with or in contact with the grafting compound. The ionizing radiation may be X-rays or gamma-rays. The examples describe the grafting of polyfluoro polymers, in the form of aqueous emulsions, to various natural and synthetic substrates.
