Abstract

932,335. Detecting salt deposits. ALLMANA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. Dec. 14, 1961 [Dec. 16, 1960], No. 44737/61. Class 37. An arrangement for detecting the presence of a salt deposit in a cooling system comprises a porous insulating block 16 between a pair of terminals or electrodes 15 placed in a channel 11 conveying cooling air, cooled in a cooler by sea water. The block may comprise one or more plates or layers of hygroscopic material of ceramic, textile, filter glass, synthetic fibre or cellulose and is mounted on an insulating body 12 screwed into a wall of the channel so that one face of the block is perpendicular to the flow of air. The current conductors 17 to the electrodes are screened by insulating bodies 18 to reduce the short-circuiting effects of deposits of salt or for instance the insulator 12. An alternating current is applied to the electrode to mitigate the effects of electrolysis and polarisation. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the conductors pass through the channel wall in separate porcelain insulators and are terminated in elongated ends to which the porous block is screwed.
