Abstract
932,104. Electrically tripped circuit-breakers. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 29, 1961 [Sept. 13, 1960], No. 31517/60. Class 38 (5). A thermal O/L relay includes a conducting member 4 which restrains a bimetallic arm 1, pivoted in a notch in an insulating base 2, against the bias of a spring 3. Current passing in the conducting wire 4 between terminals 5 heats the wire which is elongated and allows the arm 1 to move anti-clockwise so that an insulating projection 6 actuates a tripping mechanism. Due to its relationship to the wire 4 the bimetal 1 is heated by radiation, convection and conduction to shorten the effective length of the arm 1 and increase the movement of the projection 6. This allows a greater deflection setting for the tripping action so that the time required for deflection is greater at relatively low currents (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), and the tripping action due to short pulses of current is avoided.
