Abstract

1329752 Automatic circuit breakers CROUZET 17 Nov 1970 [20 Nov 1969] 54558/70 Heading H1N A push button reset, trip free circuit breaker has a two part insulating casing housing a pair of fixed contacts 2 and movable assembly comprising a pair of movable contacts 32a interconnected by a U-shaped bimetal tripping element 34. The push button 6 has a slotted extension 9 and a link 14 has a cross pin 15 engaging in its slot 9a and a second cross pin 16 engaging in a slot 11d in side plates of the movable assembly. Two co-operating latch members 20, 22 normally retain the pin 16 at the upper end of slot 11d, so that when the push button is pressed the link 14 drives the movable assembly downwards to close the contacts as shown. During this movement the pin 15 rides down a surface 17b in the casing and becomes latched beneath a plate 18. The sideways force on pin 15 due to a spring 31 biasing the movable assembly, being greater than that due to a restoring spring (19, Fig. 1, not shown) of the push button, retains the pin 15 in the latched position unless the push button is pulled upwards when the shaped slot 9a cams the pin 15 to the right releasing the whole assembly. Each movable contact 32a is carried by a resilient blade 32 riveted to an insulating block 28b and clamped at 35 to one of a pair of compensating bimetals 27 and to one free leg of the bimetal 34. The base of the U-shaped bimetal 34 is adjustable by a screw 37. When the bimetal 34 bends due to excessive current the free ends of the compensating bimetals 27 (which are insulated) tilt the first latch member 22 to relase the second member 20 which in turn releases pin 16 for movement along the slot 11d; the movable assembly can thus rise independently of the push button 6. If the push button is unimpeded its restoring spring (19) then pushes it up, pin 15 being disengaged from plate 18 by the slot 9a. The push button has differently coloured bands 7, 8 visible only in the off position.
