In a rotary pump in which the impeller shaft 50 is sealed where it extends through an opening 52 in the pump housing 14 by a mechanical seal including rotatable sealing rings 64, 66 in facial contact with stationary sealing rings 74, 76, in order to facilitate removal and replacement of the seal it is housed in a cartridge 60 comprising a pair of substantially identical cup-shaped sections 82, 84, each having an end wall 86 with an opening 88 for the shaft and a peripheral flange 92 remote from the end wall, the sections being releasably interconnected by stud bolts 104. The cartridge 60 is secured by bolts 106, spaced between the bolts 104 and passing through both flanges 92, to a plate 36 integral with a spacer frame 34 fixed to the housing 14 by bolts 40. The section 84 has a cylindrical surface 94 that enters, frictionally engages, and seals the aperture 52. The impeller 56 is secured to the shaft 50 by a bolt 58 and has a diameter allowing it to pass through an aperture 38 in housing 14 closed by the plate 36. The ceramic sealing rings 64, 66 are sealed to the shaft and driven by resilient O-rings 70, 72 and urged against the carbon steel rings 74, 76 by a stainless steel spring 68 whose opposed ends abut the 0-rings 70, 72. The rings 74, 76 are sealed to the sections 82, 84 by resilient 0-rings 78, 80. Sealing liquid is supplied through a pipe 122 to the cartridge 60 which may be vented through a pipe 108 controlled by a valve 110.
