A coin-freed bottle-vending machine comprising several superposed inclined delivery trays 2, Figs. 5 and 8, each served by a magazine 5, is provided for each tray with bottle-locking mechanisms in which, when the purchaser inserts an appropriate coin and then pulls upon the neck 6 of a bottle in a selected tray, permits the complete withdrawal of that bottle but prevents the withdrawal of bottles from the other trays. The trays are arranged in a frame 1 which, as shown in Fig. 5, has openings 9 in its end wall through which the bottles may be extracted endwise. Upon insertion of a coin C, it passes down a shoot 23, Fig. 15, to a slot 24 in a rotatably-mounted wheel 25 and releases an arm 29 from its normal locking engagement with the wheel and, as a result, releases the wheel from its locking engagement with a channel-section release member 16 which is mounted for limited vertical movement adjacent all the openings 9. Adjacent each opening 9 is mounted a shaft 10 which carries a member 12 contacting with and preventing withdrawal of the neck 6 of a bottle and an arm 13 mounted at its end with a pin 14 arranged to coact with a corresponding projection 18 and slot 19 in the release member 16. Slidably mounted in the release member is a series of superposed lock bars 20 which rest upon each other and are permitted a vertical movement only equal to the depth of one slot. In normal position, each lock bar is disposed adjacent an opening 9 and serves to mask a slot 19 and so prevent the corresponding pin 14 from entering the slot. After release of the member 16 by insertion of a coin, pulling upon the neck 6 of the selected bottle results in swinging of the corresponding pin 14 so that the latter engages the ramp 21 at the lower end of the associated lock bar 20 and enters the slot 19. The selected bottle can then be withdrawn, and, as the member 16 is then in its raised position, the other lock bars 20 are in such a position that they mask their corresponding slots 19 and so prevent engagement therein of the pins 14 and therefore such swinging movement of the members 12 as would prevent withdrawal of the corresponding bottles. The bottle next to the bottle actually being extracted, is held in position by a catch 33, Fig. 8, which is arranged to be depressed by a finger 35 on the shaft 10.
