Abstract

[Also in Groups XIX and XX] An instrument bearing has a magnetostrictive vibrator device which acts on one of the two relatively rotatable bearing parts along the axis of rotation to reduce friction. As shown applied to a rate-of-turn gyroscope, the electrically-driven rotor 12 is mounted on a spin axis S within a casing 11 which is floated in oil within a container 10. On rotation of the supporting craft about axis I the gyroscope precesses about the output axis O against the action of a restoring torque provided by device 17, such precession being detected by pick-off 16. Each bearing assembly 15 for the shaft 14 carrying casing 11 comprises a laminated pot core 20 having a central limb 23 of nickel or other magneto-strictive material, and an exciting winding 25 so that the housing 21 for the jewelled bearing 22 is in continuous axial vibration relative to the jounrnal on shaft 14.
