Abstract
1310525 Gyroscopes SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 May 1970 [14 May 1969] 24636/69 Heading G1C [Also in Division F2] A rate gyroscope has a tungsten carbide rotor 11 supported by a journal shaft 18 contained in a gimbal frame 12, the frame being formed of two separate parts 29, 30 which are clamped individually to the journal which thus forms a strut. Thrust plates 23 are also clamped to the frame at either end of the rotor. The bearing surfaces are provided with spiral grooves to provide hydrodynamic bearings between the surfaces. The rotor 11 is driven by an electrical threephase hysteresis motor having windings 15 carried on an armature ring 14 mounted in the frame. A tungsten steel driving band 16 is inset into the rotor 11. The frame 12 is mounted in the casing 2 for oscillation about the axis 3. The gyroscope measures the rate of angular movement of the casing about axis (33) perpendicular to the axes 3 and 13. Such angular movement causes precession torque to be applied to the gimbal structure 1 about the axis 3. Precession about the axis is opposed by a resilient torsion bar 6. A measure of the angular displacement and hence the angular velocity is provided by the electrical signal derived in the stator 7 of an electromagnetic pick-off.
