Abstract

931,317. Magnetic storage apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Feb. 26, 1962 [March 13, 1961], No. 7425/62. Class 40 (9). [Also in Group XXII] The threading of a wire back and forth through an array of toroidal storage cores is assisted by wrapping the wire about powerdriven capstans located on opposite sides of the array. As shown in Fig. 1, the storage cores 12 are supported by row and column wires X, Y which are attached to terminals 10 on a frame 11, the cores being grouped into four submatrices. The frame is carried by a jig 33 which has locating pins 36 arranged to engage any one of four groups of holes 45, 45<SP>1</SP>, 45<SP>11</SP>, 45<SP>111</SP> in a plate 40. Each of the four possible locations of the jig and frame, as determined by the groups of holes, positions a different one of the submatrices adjacent two sets of capstans 14 with one set at each end of the columns X. The arrangement is used to thread a sense wire through all the cores in a submatrix, and a length of wire sufficient to thread two submatrices is wound on a drum 15 with a stiff wire or needle 75, Fig. 8, welded to one wire end. To thread the sense wire Z with the jig and frame positioned as shown, the needle and wire is passed downwards through the right-hand column of the upper left-hand submatrix, around a capstan 14, upwards through the next column to the left, around the associated capstan 14 and so on, progress of the wire through the array being assisted by the capstans. When the left-hand submatrix is fully wired, the jig is first raised so as to move the threaded sense wire out of contact with the capstans, and is then moved to a new wiring position by sliding the jig with the locating pins 36 in engagement with grooves 46 until the pins fit into holes 45<SP>1</SP>. The capstans 14 are then aligned with the upper right-hand submatrix which is wired in the same manner, as previously described, after reversing the drum 15 in its spindle and welding the other wire end to a stiff wire or needle. The lower two submatrices are wired in similar manner, the jig being guided by grooves 46, 46<SP>11</SP>, 46<SP>111</SP> to holes 45<SP>11</SP>, 45<SP>111</SP> and so on, and a fresh length of wire being fitted to the drum. Details of the drum, its spindle and support, and of a gear-box arranged to impart unidirectional rotation to each row of capstans from a common motor drive are also described, Figs. 2 to 7 (not shown). Specification 852,543 is referred to.
