Abstract

1306034 Magnetic storage devices MICRO-MINIATURE PARTS CORP 5 Jan 1971 [12 Jan 1970] 503/71 Heading H3B In a method of wiring magnetic ring core planes, magnetic needles to which drive wires are attached are passed through the cores along respective rows and columns. The correct vertical positioning of the wires in each core aperture is achieved by magnetic forces acting on the needles; for example all the row needles may be guided to the lower parts of the apertures, and all the column needles to the upper parts. In Fig. 1, sixteen core planes 54 are placed on a base 10, each plane having a magnetic body with recesses for the cores, Fig. 4 (not shown). The base 10 has eight tracks 18 along which a magnetic shuttle 12 may slide, the shuttle having longitudinal grooves 20, Fig. 3, in which the needles lie. The shuttle body 16 is of aluminium, and has strip magnets 28 embedded in epoxy 30. A sponge rubber clamp may be placed in a recess 14 in the body to hold the needles firmly. The drive wires are wound on a spool 76, and each is attached to a respective needle. Operation.-To thread the rows of four planes, the needles are placed on the shuttle 12 when it is in the position shown in Fig. 1, and are held by the sponge clamp. The shuttle is moved to the right, and the needles enter the first core plane. The clamp is then freed and placed on a bar 61 to hold the needles steady relative to the core plane while the shuttle is moved back to the left. The clamp is then used to hold the needles on the shuttle and the process is repeated until the needles emerge at the other end of the core planes. The remaining rows may then be similarly threaded, followed by the columns. Finally the wires are drawn through the cores using devices 66 clamped to the needle ends. A guide wire 74, Fig. 1, determines whether the needles pass into the upper or lower parts of the apertures of the cores in conjunction with the magnetic forces between the needles and the core plane magnets. A large shuttle may be used to wire all the rows or columns at the same time, Fig. 11 (not shown). More than two wires may be passed through each core.
