Abstract
904,516. Digital data-storage. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 19, 1961 [June 22, 1960], No. 21996/61. Class 106 (1). In an array of bi-stable magnetic cores words of predetermined fixed length are stored in columns of the array, as at locations 21 to 25, and words of variable length in rows, as at locations 50 to 56. The fixed length words are read in and out of the array in parallel; are read in by applying half-write currents from generators, e.g. 1 and 8, in conjunction with inhibit currents from generators 34, and are read out by supplying half-reset currents from the generators, e.g. 1 and 8, the switching currents from the cores being applied over sense lines 35 to a register 33. The variable length words are read in and out in series by character. Once read out a word may be re-written by opening gates 70 to 74 or passed to arithmetic unit 75 and afterwards re-written or transferred to arithmetic register 91.
