Abstract

931,170. Tentering-machines. SINGER-COBBLE Ltd. April 18, 1962 [March 21, 1961], No. 10223/61. Class 42 (2). A tentering-machine for handling tufted fabrics having untufted longitudinal margins A is characterized by at least one sensing device 9 at each side of the machine to sense the outermost line of tufts B and, in dependence on the pressure applied thereto by the tufts B, to adjust the relative width-wise position of the tenter chains 1 and the fabric so that the pinning or clamping of the latter is at a constant distance from the outermost tufts B. The sensing device comprises a spring-loaded feeler 9 projecting from a control box 8 to bear against the outermost tufts B of a carpet. Displacement of the feeler 9 operates a micro-switch for a control means which moves the chains 1 into alignment with the carpet, e.g. a reversible electric motor operating a screw-and-nut mechanism as described in Specification 922,816. Alternatively, the carpet feeding means may be moved into alignment with the tentering- machine. A folder 6 is provided to turn over any excess width A<SP>1</SP> of the margin A, the foldedover portion being impaled on pins 5. A bush 7 pushes the margin A well down on to the pins. In a modification (not shown) the margin A is held by tenter clips.
