Abstract

931,093. Recording-apparatus. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd. Feb. 16, 1960 [Feb. 16, 1959], No. 5341/59. Class 106 (4). Tape-advancing mechanism in recording- apparatus comprises a needle 8 with its point directed towards a deflecting surface 12 and reciprocable in the direction of its own axis, the amplitude of reciprocation being such that at the end of its forward stroke its point strikes the surface 12 at an acute angle and is deflected laterally. The tape 5, Fig. 2, is guided between plates 4, 6 having elongated slots 7, through which the needle 8 passes to strike the roller 12, whereby it is deflected to advance the tape 5, which is held by a spring bearing thereon when the needle 8 is retracted. The needle 8 may be pivoted on an extension 22, Fig. 3, of a plunger 23 of a solenoid 13. At the bottom of its stroke a microswitch 32 closes to de-energize solenoid 13 and at the top of the return stroke the switch 32 opens. The timing may be adjusted by a pad bolt 38. The apparatus may be used, e.g. for recording the pin hole testing of enamelled wire in which a marking needle 10, Fig. 2, is caused to operate each time the number of faults in a given length of wire exceeds a predetermined limit. The speed of the tape may be correlated with that of the wire passing through the tester. Where each fault has to be separately recorded a needle 29, Fig. 3, is operated by a solenoid 14 for each fault at the same time advancing the tape in the same way as the needle 8 and in addition thereto. Another embodiment, Fig. 8, is described using a plurality of flexible needles 55 guided in tubes 56 and deflected each in a V- groove of a wheel 49 on a shaft 48. The results of tests on different articles may thus be recorded simultaneously and the tape may be advanced by one needle only or by each. Another embodiment with a pair of solenoidoperated needles uses a rubber friction roller to hold the tape against backward movement freeing it to move forward and also adjustable means to eliminate any tendency of the needle to tear the tape during withdrawal.
