Abstract

930,900. Hydraulic accumulators. GREER HYDRAULICS Inc. Jan. 12, 1962, No. 1270/62. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic accumulator comprises an elongated container having an axial port 57, a curved end wall 13 and a substantially cylindrical side wall 12, a deformable bladder 45 having a mouth with a thickened rim 47, a flexible clamp plate 48 having an annular recess 51 for receiving the thickened rim and an opening 57 aligned with the axial port, and means 55 extending through the opening and port to secure the clamp plate against the end wall adjacent the port. The bladder when undistended is of less length than the container and a portion 65 of its wall adjacent the rim 47 is thicker than the remainder of the wall and engages a bent part 52 of the clamp plate and the junction of the end wall 13 and side wall 12 of the container. The means securing the plate to the container consists of a plug 55 which may be welded to the plate and is retained in position by a nut 61, a port 62 and valve 63 being provided in the plug for supplying gas to the accumulator. The cylindrical wall 12 of the container is welded to an end member 14 in which is a valve 22 for hydraulic fluid comprising a member 35 urged to a position opening ports 37 by a spring 43. The accumulator is assembled by first engaging the rim 47 on the recess 51 of the plate and securing the plate to the end wall 13 by the nut 61 and then welding the end member 14 to the wall 12. Gas is thereafter supplied through the valve 63 to the bladder which is extended to fill the container and press the clamp plate 48 into engagement with the end wall, the rim 47 of the bladder being deformed as shown in Fig. 2. When hydraulic fluid is supplied through the valve 22, the gas and bladder are compressed but because the region between the plate 48 and end wall 13 is at a lower pressure than the gas and liquid, the plate 48 is retained against the end wall to maintain the rim securely clamped. The thickened portion 65 of the bladder ensures that extension of the bladder occurs mainly in the less thick portion and reduces the tendency for the rim 47 being pulled from between the clamp plate and end wall.
