[Also in Groups XVI and XXIV] When a respective one of triple photo-electric cells 28, Fig. 1, detects a deficiency in the feed of double-length filter plugs or flanking cigarettes on a mouthpiece machine assembly belt 27 formed as described in Specification 920,409, the feed of cork uniting band material 24 is interrupted. The cells 28 operate via an electrical circuit 30 described in detail (Fig. 9, not shown) and are effectively in series with (a) a centrifugal switch 31 which interrupts the material feed below a given machine speed and (b) a manual switch 32 depression of which interrupts the material feed. Feed interruption is effected by de-energization of a solenoid 33 which, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 8, normally causes rollers 35, 35A to hold the material 24 in contact with drive and gluing rolls 34, 34A, respectively, the material being released and brought into contact with a braking anvil 36 as the solenoid cuts out. Deficiency in the feed of cigarettes from a cigarette-making machine is detected by a further photo-electric cell 2, Fig. 1, which operates via electrical circuits 6, 10 described in detail (Fig. 5, not shown) to disconnect via a solenoid 3, and for the period of deficiency only, a plug feed dog clutch 7 (see Group XXIV) which on plug feed jamming also overrides and is then held disconnected by its actuation of a detector switch 5 which operates the solenoid 3. Actuation of a manual switch 11 de-energizes the solenoid 3 and re-connects the clutch 7 whether disconnection has been due to jamming or cigarette deficiency. To operate the mouthpiece machine without feeding plugs a manual switch 12 is provided which when operated disconnects the clutch 7 and prevents its reconnection even if the switch 11 is actuated. The switches 12, 32 are mechanically linked for simultaneous actuation. The material 24 is fed to a vacuum drum 15 electrically heated as in Specification 919,847 and which, to prevent scorching of cigarettemouthpiece assemblies, is lifted from and returned to the belt 27 on machine stoppage and starting respectively. To effect this, a main clutch lever 13, which controls the cigarettemaking machine as well as the mouthpiece machine and which is movable from a slowrunning through a neutral to a fast-running position, operates a micro-switch 14 which in combination with upper and lower limit switches 20, 21 actuates the control circuit 17 (Fig. 7, not shown) of a reversible motor 16 moving the drum 15 vertically through a link 18. A twosecond delay circuit 23 is incorporated to allow the lever 13 to be passed rapidly through neutral without initiating raising of the drum 15. The motor 16 has electrical braking means 22.
