Abstract
A porous insulating material, used in a laminated thermal insulation (see Group VIII), comprises a particulate filler agglomerate consisting essentially of ultimate structural units with diameters less than 100 millimicrons and with the mean diameter of the average pore space between the smallest of the structural units about the same as the mean free path of the molecules comprising air at 150 DEG F. and atmospheric pressure, and a binder dispersed throughout the agglomerate in an amount sufficient to lend integrity thereto up to 35% by weight of porous insulating material. The particulate filler may be a channel black, or an aerogel of, e.g., silica, chromic oxide, thoria, magnesium hydroxide, alumina or mixtures thereof. The binder may be a glass or enamel fusing at low temperature, a phosphate, an alkali metal silicate, a phenol- or urea-formal-dehyde resin, polyvinyl chloride, a vinyl chloride/acetate copolymer or a silicone. The porous material may also include staple fibres, e.g. asbestos fibres, mineral fibres, glass fibres or organic fibres, which may be of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or polyacrylate. The porous material may also include an opacifier, which may be metallic aluminium or silicon powder, carbon black or a finely divided pigment, e.g. iron oxide (Fe2O3) or chromium oxide (CrO or CrO2), zircon or titanium dioxide. Specification 930,754 is referred to.
