Abstract

In making thermal insulation material, absorbent particles, e.g. sodium aluminium silicate particles of size 0.5-5 micron, are saturated with a gas, or with a liquid which when heated yields a gas, of lower thermal conductivity than that of air and inert to the ultimate material, e.g. dichlorodifluoromethane or sulphur hexafluoride, the saturated particles are mixed with a curable, liquid synthetic resin, e.g. liquid polyvinyl alcohol or polyisocyanatemodified polyester resin, and the mixture is subjected to heat and pressure to release the gas and inflate, set and cure the synthetic resin. The thermal insulating material may be formed in situ between the inner and outer walls of a refrigerator cabinet, the mixture being preferably for this purpose enclosed in a water- and air-impervious bag containing a compressible layer of rock wool or glass wool.ALSO:In making thermal insulation material, absorbent particles, e.g. sodium aluminium silicate particles of size 0,5-5 micron, are saturated with a gas, or with a liquid which when heated yields a gas, of lower thermal conductivity than that of air and inert to the ultimate material, e.g. dichlorodifluoromethane or sulphur hexafluoride, the saturated particles are mixed with a curable, liquid synthetic resin, e.g. liquid polyvinyl alcohol or polyisocyanate-modified polyester resin, and the mixture is subjected to heat and pressure to release the gas and inflate, set and cure the synthetic resin.
