Abstract

930,746. Measuring electrically. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. March 9, 1962 [April 13, 1961], No. 9146/62. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] Apparatus for electrically measuring a property of a substance, situated so as to prohibit direct electrical connection between it and an observing station, comprises a frequencysensitive A.C. bridge adjacent the substance, the bridge being of the type whose output is a minimum for one value of input frequency, at least one element in the bridge being variable in accordance with the property to alter the frequency at which the output is a minimum, and at least one transformer between the bridge and the observing station, constructed to permit relative movement between its primary and secondary windings. A Wien bridge including temperature-sensitive resistors 10, 11 is adjusted to minimise the inductive effect of the resistors by adjusting potentiometer 7 before sealing it inside tube 6, e.g. a nuclear fuel rod. As the temperature varies the frequency at which null output occurs is determined and is a measure of the temperature. Wall 5 is preferably non- magnetic e.g. zircalloy II or stainless steel, but may be of thin ferromagnetic material if lower frequencies are used. Tables are given of suitable transformer dimensions and electrical properties. Detector 25 may be an oscilloscope or a phase-sensitive detector. A single E-type transformer may be used for input and output if harmonics are generated from the output by feeding it through a rectifier. Tube 6 and the elements inside it may move relative to the external elements, and either the source or the detector may be enclosed with the bridge for certain applications.
