Abstract
793,953. Electric tests. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. March 2, 1956 [March 18, 1955], No. 7894/55. Class 37. The level of a conductive liquid 14 in a conductive tank 10 is determined by a metal probe 13 which dips into, and is insulated from, the tank, the arrangement being that probe, liquid, and tank constitute an inductance which with condenser 15 forms a series resonant circuit. This circuit is fed from the output of an oscillator 27 the frequency of which is variable by knob 28 calibrated in terms of depth of liquid, through a coaxial cable 22, condenser 20 and potential divider 16-17. The voltage developed across divider section 17 in parallel with the resonant circuit is rectified at 18, smoothed by condenser 19 and fed through the coaxial cable to meter 26 in series with limiting resistance 25. Oscillator 28 is adjusted until a dip in the reading of meter 24 indicates resonance when the oscillator frequency indicates the depth of the liquid. Alternatively condenser 25 may be varied while the oscillator frequency is constant. The working frequency must be so chosen as to avoid ambiguities such as arise when probe 13 acts as a half-wave line.
